What a haze machine actually does (it's about beams, not fog)
This is the single biggest misunderstanding we deal with on the phone. People call asking for a haze machine because they want a thick low-lying cloud across the dance floor. That's a fogger or a low-fog (dry ice / CO2) effect. A hazer does the opposite job.
A hazer puts an extremely fine, almost invisible particle suspension into the air. You shouldn't see the haze itself. You should see what it does to your light. Every beam from a moving head, every laser line, every shaft from an LED bar becomes a visible solid object hanging in the room. No haze, no beams. No beams, no light show.
If a client tells us they want "that smoky club look," we ask one question: do you want to see the air, or do you want to see the lights? Nine times out of ten, they want to see the lights. That's a hazer.
Why hazers matter for Bay Area DJ booths, concerts, and dance floors
The Bay Area runs a particular kind of show. Tech-money corporate events at the San Jose Civic. Hard-techno warehouse nights in Oakland and the Dogpatch. Indie bands at the Fox Theater Oakland. Wedding receptions on a Sausalito rooftop. They all benefit from haze for the same reason: rooms here are physically large, ceilings are high, and audiences spread out rather than pack tight.
The further your audience is from a fixture, the less impact a beam has, because there's nothing in the air to reflect the light back at viewing height. Haze fixes that across the whole room at once. A single well-placed hazer in a 2,000 capacity room can do more for the look of the show than another $5,000 in fixtures.

Water-based vs oil-based — what we rent and why
Two chemistries, two different jobs.
- Water-based haze (glycol/glycerin in deionized water): hangs in the air about 15-30 minutes, dissipates without leaving residue, won't trip most modern smoke detectors at moderate output, won't coat the venue's gear. This is what almost every managed Bay Area venue requires.
- Oil-based haze (mineral oil through a cracker-style machine like the MDG Atmosphere): hangs much longer (an hour plus), reads more cinematically on camera, but leaves a faint film on every surface over a long run. Touring productions with film capture love it. Most clubs and corporate spaces hate it.
For 95% of what we rent into the Bay Area, water-based is the right answer. We carry Look Solutions Unique 2.1 and Antari HZ-500 machines as our daily drivers. For the rare festival, music video, or feature-film shoot that asks for oil-based, we have MDG Atmosphere units with the right fluid and the technician time to clean up after.

Venue and alarm considerations across SF, Oakland, and San Jose
This is where Bay Area haze rentals get real. The machine is the easy part. The venue is where shows go sideways.
Managed venues with house production teams — 1015 Folsom, Audio SF, Public Works, Fox Theater Oakland, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Jose Civic — almost all have a documented haze protocol. The fire marshal has signed off on a procedure: smoke detection gets put into bypass mode for the show window, a fire watch is posted, haze runs at agreed output levels. We've worked all of these rooms. Tell us the venue when you book and we'll match the gear and paperwork to what they already approve.
The historical reference most Bay Area lighting techs still use is Mezzanine, which closed in 2020. That room's house crew set the template a lot of newer SF venues still follow — clean water-based output, professional bypass protocol, no drama.
Non-traditional venues need a real conversation before the event. Warehouses in West Oakland and the Dogpatch, lofts in SoMa, art galleries in the Mission, private estates in Atherton, hotel ballrooms running on a generic property fire system — these spaces have alarm panels that were never designed with shows in mind. Photoelectric smoke detectors will trip on water-based haze if nobody disables them. We've watched a wedding reception evacuate at 9:45 PM because nobody made that call in advance. Don't be that wedding.
The protocol we recommend, and that most managed Bay Area venues already run:
- Identify the alarm panel's monitoring company and contact at least 72 hours ahead.
- Schedule a documented bypass for the haze hours, with start and end times in writing.
- Post a fire watch (a person physically watching for actual smoke) for the bypass window — required by most SF and Oakland fire codes.
- Run the hazer at the lowest output that does the job. More haze isn't better; it's just more risk.
- Restore the system the moment the show ends.

Output, run-up time, and room size
A 1,500 sq ft loft and a 15,000 sq ft warehouse need very different things. As a working rule:
- Under 2,000 sq ft: one Antari HZ-500 or equivalent, run at 20-30% output, refilled before the start.
- 2,000-6,000 sq ft: one Look Solutions Unique 2.1 at 40-60%, or two smaller units stationed at opposite sides.
- 6,000-15,000 sq ft: two Unique 2.1 units, or one MDG with on-site tech.
- Over 15,000 sq ft (festival stages, large warehouse parties): multiple units, on-site tech mandatory, fluid resupply mid-show.
Run-up matters. Most water-based hazers need 5-10 minutes to reach operating temperature, then another 15-20 minutes to bring the room to a usable haze density. Start the hazer roughly 30 minutes before doors. Firing it up as the headliner walks on is too late — you'll spend the first three songs watching haze build instead of seeing the light show you paid for.

Pricing and lead time
Daily rates for a water-based hazer with fluid included start around $150-$250 depending on the unit. A full kit with delivery, on-site tech for setup, and tech for strike is typically $400-$700 for a single-day Bay Area event. Multi-day runs and festival deployments are quoted per project.
Lead time we'd like is one week. Lead time we can usually still pull off is 24-48 hours inside SF and the East Bay. Same-day in San Francisco is possible if we have inventory; call don't email.

Will a haze machine set off the venue's smoke alarms?
Water-based hazers at moderate output usually won't trigger ionization detectors but can trigger photoelectric ones if you're heavy-handed. The right answer is never "hope for the best" — it's coordinating an alarm bypass with the venue and posting a fire watch for the show window.
Is haze safe to breathe?
Water-based haze (glycol/glycerin in water) is the same chemistry used in theatrical productions for 30+ years and is safe for performers and audiences at typical concert exposures. Some people with asthma or sensitivities prefer to stand further from output. We always run the lowest output that gets the look.
How is a hazer different from a fog machine?
A fog machine produces visible thick clouds, often used for low-lying ground effects with chillers. A hazer produces an almost-invisible particle suspension that makes light beams visible. They're solving different problems. Most modern Bay Area shows want haze, not fog.
Can I run the hazer myself or do I need your tech?
For small DJ events under 300 capacity in a known-friendly venue, you can run it yourself; we'll brief you on output and DMX. For anything larger, anything in a non-traditional venue, or anything where the alarm protocol is unclear, we strongly recommend having our technician on-site.
