Moving Head vs Par Lights: Stage Lighting Explained

A working tech's guide to par cans, moving heads, and followspots — what each fixture does, when to use it, and why your beam look needs haze.

Short answer: par cans are fixed wash lights that paint a room in color. Moving heads aim themselves and can sweep, pulse, or punch a tight beam across a dance floor. You almost always want both, plus haze in the air to make any beam visible. The rest of this is the why.

I rig lights for weddings at Mountain Winery, corporate galas in SoMa hotel ballrooms, and club nights at venues like 1015 Folsom. The same four fixture families show up everywhere — par cans, moving head washes, moving head spot/beams, and the occasional followspot. Once you understand what each one is built to do, picking a rental package stops feeling like guesswork.

Par cans: the workhorse wash light

A par can is a fixed-direction fixture. You point it once, gel or program a color, and it stays put for the whole show. The modern version is an LED par — usually RGBW or RGBAW — that hangs on truss, sits on the floor as an uplight, or clamps to a pipe.

Throw distance is short to medium: useful color from about 5 to 25 feet. That makes pars perfect for:

  • Ballroom uplighting. Twenty to forty pars around the perimeter of a hotel ballroom, washing the walls amber or deep blue. This is the bread-and-butter wedding and gala look.
  • Stage front wash. A row of pars on the downstage edge fills faces with light so the audience can actually see speakers and performers.
  • Backdrop and drape color. Pars aimed at pipe-and-drape or a cyc give you that saturated background you see behind every keynote stage.
  • Theatrical key and fill. ETC Source Four pars and similar theatrical fixtures are still the standard for traditional theater rigs.

Pars are cheap to rent, easy to rig, and almost impossible to break. The tradeoff: they do not move. If you need the light to follow a bride down the aisle or sweep the dance floor, a par cannot help you.

Moving head wash vs spot/beam: what changes when the head moves

A moving head is a par with a motorized yoke. Pan and tilt motors let the fixture aim itself anywhere in the room, controlled by your lighting console over DMX. From there, moving heads split into two sub-families that are often confused but built for very different jobs.

Moving head wash

A wash mover is a moving head with a wide, soft beam — basically a par on a yoke. It throws the same kind of color wash a par does, except it can pan across the room mid-show. Use cases:

  • Sweeping audience color. Banks of wash movers hung on truss can flood the audience in red during a peak moment, then snap to blue for the next song.
  • Stage wash that changes scenes. One wash mover can do the work of three or four pars by re-aiming for each cue.
  • Architectural color on bigger surfaces. Buildings, large drapes, the back wall of a warehouse venue.

Moving head spot or beam

This is the fixture people picture when they hear "club lighting." A spot or beam mover has a much narrower, sharper, more intense beam. A beam fixture can be 1 to 4 degrees wide — basically a laser-thin shaft of light. A spot is wider, often 10 to 20 degrees, and adds gobos (cut-out patterns) and a sharp focus edge.

What you get from spot/beam movers:

  • Aerial beam looks. Tight beams cutting through haze, fanning out and pulsing to music. The signature club rig at 1015 Folsom or any dance floor that feels like a real party.
  • Gobo projection. Logos, leaf patterns, monograms, custom shapes projected on a wall, ceiling, or dance floor. Weddings use this for the couple's monogram. Corporate uses it for the brand mark.
  • Performer specials. A tight spot mover can punch a single performer out of an otherwise dim stage.

You cannot run any moving head from a wall switch. Every mover needs a DMX controller — either a hardware console (grandMA, Avolites, Hog) or software (MA3 onPC, Chamsys MagicQ). Every fixture also has a personality file (sometimes called a profile) that tells the console which DMX channels do what: pan, tilt, color wheel, gobo wheel, dimmer, strobe, and so on. A typical spot mover eats 16 to 24 DMX channels per fixture. Plan your DMX universes accordingly.

Followspots: when you need a human operator

A followspot is a narrow, intense fixture mounted on a stand with handles, run by a human operator who tracks a performer manually. Yes, in 2026, with all the automated tracking systems available, people still rent followspots — because nothing tracks an unpredictable performer (a bride walking down a curving aisle, a CEO wandering into the audience, a singer who improvises blocking) as reliably as a trained op with their hands on the fixture.

You probably want a followspot if:

  • The performer's path is not pre-programmed and rehearsed.
  • You need a tight, clean iris on a single subject for an extended scene.
  • The venue is large enough that automated tracking systems are out of budget.

Skip the followspot if your event is short, the blocking is fixed, or your budget is tight. A spot mover with rehearsed cues will get you most of the way there.

  • Followspot: Hand-operated narrow spot on a stand. Best for: live performer tracking, awards shows. Rental price: medium plus operator labor.

Choosing for your event type

Wedding (Bay Area outdoor or ballroom). Heavy on pars for uplighting (24-40 fixtures around the room is typical), 4-8 wash movers on truss for dance floor color, and 2-4 spot movers if you want a gobo monogram or aerial effects when the dancing starts. A DJ booth lighting setup usually covers the booth itself separately.

Corporate gala or keynote. Pars for uplighting and stage wash, wash movers for audience color during awards moments, spot movers if you want logo gobos. Followspot if a human is presenting an award and walking into the audience. Skip beam fixtures unless the after-party calls for them.

Club night. Heavy on beam movers and spot movers — this is where they earn their rental rate. Minimal pars unless you need a few uplights for the bar. Haze running constantly. The 1015 Folsom-style truss rig is mostly movers.

Concert. All four fixture families. Pars for stage wash, wash movers for audience flooding, beam movers for aerials, spot movers for gobos, followspot for the lead singer. Bigger shows add strobes, blinders, and pyrotechnics on top.

Why beams need haze

A beam of light is invisible until it hits something. In clean air, a moving head beam mover at 200 watts will produce a perfect circle of light wherever it lands — and absolutely nothing visible in between the fixture and the floor. That is not the look anyone is paying for.

Haze (or light fog) puts a fine particulate suspension in the air. The beam scatters off those particles, and suddenly your tight aerial shaft is visible from fixture to floor. This is why every concert, every club, and every wedding with serious dance floor lighting runs a hazer.

Haze is not the same as fog. Fog is dense, low-lying, and obvious — it's what you want for a grand entrance reveal. Haze is subtle, fills the room evenly, and is invisible until light hits it. One practical note: most Bay Area hotels and some venues are sensitive to haze because it can trigger smoke alarms. Always check with the venue before booking, and budget time for a pre-event walkthrough with the engineer to bypass or sensitize alarms.

FAQ

Do I need a lighting designer to run moving heads? For anything beyond a handful of fixtures, yes. A moving head rig without programmed cues is just expensive pars that twitch randomly. Most rental shops, ours included, can quote a designer and op alongside the gear.

Can I use moving heads outdoors? Some are IP-rated for outdoor use, most are not. If your event is at a Bay Area outdoor venue — vineyard, garden, beach — ask specifically for IP65 fixtures or plan for tenting and weather backup.

How many pars do I need for ballroom uplighting? Roughly one fixture every 8-10 feet around the perimeter. A 5,000 sq ft ballroom usually takes 24-32 pars to look right. Underspaced uplights leave dark gaps between hot spots.

What's the difference between a beam, a spot, and a wash on a moving head spec sheet? Beam angle. Beam fixtures are 1-4°, spots are typically 10-20°, washes are 20-50°+. Many modern movers are hybrids that zoom across two of these ranges.

Do I need haze for par-only events? No. Pars produce diffuse wash light that doesn't rely on visible beams. Save the hazer budget for events that include movers or beam effects.

Can I rent just one moving head for a small event? You can, but it rarely looks good. A single mover sweeping by itself reads as a malfunction. Plan for at least four matched fixtures so cues look intentional and symmetric.

Putting it together

Picking lighting for an event is mostly about matching fixture types to the job: pars for color on surfaces, wash movers for dynamic flood, spot/beam movers for aerials and gobos, followspots for live performer tracking. Add haze any time beams are involved. The rest is programming, budget, and venue logistics.
