Dry Ice vs Fog Machine vs Hazer: Honest Guide

A working FX tech breaks down the three fog technologies, what each actually looks like on camera, and which one fits your venue and your budget.

You searched "dry ice vs fog machine" because you saw a video of a couple's first dance with fog rolling across the floor like a cloud, and now your fog machine arrives, you fire it up, and the room fills with a sad gray mist that looks nothing like the video. I've been the FX tech on the other end of that disappointed phone call more times than I can count. So before you rent anything, here is the 30-second answer, then the long version.

Short answer: Dry ice is the only thing that gives you low-lying, ground-clinging fog. A standard fog machine fills the air at chest and head height. A hazer makes light beams visible and barely shows up on its own. They look completely different, cost completely different, and the wrong one will blow your alarm system or your budget.

1. Dry ice fog: the ground-hugging cloud

Dry ice is solid CO2 at -109°F. Drop a chunk into hot water (around 160°F is the sweet spot) and it sublimates straight from solid to gas, dragging condensed water vapor with it. That gas is heavier than air, so it sinks and pools across the floor. That is the look you wanted from the wedding video. Nothing else does it.

What dry ice gets you:

  • A dense white blanket 6 to 18 inches off the floor
  • Dwell time of 30 to 90 seconds before it dissipates
  • No oily residue, no smell, no trigger on standard smoke alarms (it's CO2 plus water vapor, not particulate)
  • Looks incredible on camera, especially with rim light from below

What dry ice costs you:

  • Roughly $2-4 per pound of dry ice, and a typical first dance burns 30-60 lb in about 5 minutes
  • You need a dry-ice fog generator (a heated water tank with a basket) or a low-fog machine that can pre-chill standard glycol fog
  • Someone has to load it. Dry ice arrives in coolers, has a 24-hour shelf life if you're lucky, and burns skin on contact. This is not a set-it-and-forget-it effect
  • It dissipates fast. You get the moment, not the night
  • CO2 displaces oxygen at floor level. In a small, sealed room with kids or pets crawling around, that's a real concern

Use dry ice when the moment matters more than the duration: first dance, grand entrance, a single hero song. Skip it for ambient atmosphere across a 4-hour reception.

2. Glycol and water-based fog machines: the volume play

This is what most people picture when they say "fog machine." A heating element vaporizes a glycol or glycerin fluid into a dense white cloud at room temperature. The cloud is roughly the same density as air, so it doesn't sink. It hangs at chest and head height, drifts with the room's air currents, and slowly fills the space.

This is the workhorse of haunted houses, club nights, theatrical productions, and Halloween parties. It's cheap, the fluid lasts forever, and a $300 machine will fog a 2,000 sq ft room in under a minute.

The honest tradeoffs:

  • Smoke alarms. Photoelectric alarms read fog particulate as smoke. If your venue has alarms tied to a monitored fire system, you will trip them. I have personally watched a fire truck pull up to a corporate holiday party because someone hit the fog button under a ceiling sensor. Always ask the venue, always do a test burst, and budget for an alarm bypass if you need one
  • Linger. Glycol fog hangs in still air for 5-15 minutes. In a low-ceilinged room with no airflow, you will fog yourself out and people in the back can't see the stage
  • The look. It's mid-air. It does not pool. If a client says "I want fog like the wedding videos" and points at a low cloud, a fog machine is the wrong tool. Period
  • Residue. Modern water-based fluids leave essentially nothing on surfaces. Old-school oil-based crackers do, and they will get you blacklisted from any venue with a wood floor

3. Hazers: the one everybody mislabels

A hazer is not a fog machine, even though every Amazon listing calls it one. Hazers atomize an oil or water-based fluid into particles small enough that they're nearly invisible on their own. You walk into a hazed room and you don't see fog. You see what the hazer is actually for: light beams.

Every concert lighting shot you've ever screenshotted, every Coachella wide-angle with shafts of color cutting across the crowd, every cinematic interior with a window beam, that's haze. The particles in the air refract light just enough to make every beam visible without obscuring sightlines.

Two types worth knowing:

  • Oil-based hazers (DF-50, MDG ATMe): finest particle size, longest hang time (45+ minutes), the industry standard for film and high-end concerts. Expensive fluid, and the residue is real, oily, and slippery on tile floors
  • Water-based hazers (Antari HZ series, Look Solutions Unique): coarser particle, hangs 10-20 minutes, no oily residue, almost no smoke alarm risk at low output. Good enough for 95% of corporate and wedding work

If your client says "I want it to look cinematic" or "I want to see the lights," they want haze. Not fog. Two completely different effects.

5. Indoor venues: the ceiling and alarm question

Before you pick an effect, three questions about the room:

  1. Ceiling height. Under 10 ft and a fog machine will trap fog at face level and never clear. Over 20 ft and dry ice fog dissipates before it spreads. Match the effect to the room
  2. Alarm system. Photoelectric (most common in newer venues) reacts to fog. Ionization alarms react less. Sprinklers don't trigger from fog or haze, only from heat. Ask the venue manager for a written sign-off, or for the cost to put their system in test mode for the event window. Do not skip this.   3. HVAC. A room with strong return-air will eat haze and fog as fast as you can produce it. A room with no airflow will trap it. Talk to whoever is running the AV about cutting return air during the effect window

6. The combo move: dry ice for the moment, haze for the night

The cheat code for a wedding or a serious corporate event is to run two effects in parallel.

Light haze on a timer all night, output dialed low so guests don't notice it directly but every uplight, every gobo, every moving head suddenly has shape and depth. Then for the first dance, the entrance, or the keynote reveal, you fire dry ice for 60-90 seconds. Two effects, two distinct moments, no compromise on either.

This is what the wedding videographers you're chasing on Instagram are actually doing. The "dancing on a cloud" shot is dry ice. The dreamy backlit wide shot of the room with beams of color cutting across is haze. Both, not either.

7. FAQ

Will a fog machine set off the smoke alarms in my venue?
Probably yes if the alarms are photoelectric and the venue hasn't been set up for it. Always do a test burst before guests arrive, and get a written sign-off from the venue. Hazers at low output are much safer; dry ice is essentially zero risk because it's CO2 and water vapor without particulate.

How much dry ice do I need for a 5-minute first dance?
Plan for 30-60 lb depending on room size and how dense you want the cloud. A 1500 sq ft dance floor with a single low-fog machine wants the higher end. Dry ice has to be used the day it arrives, so don't over-order by much.

Can I use a regular fog machine to get low fog if I add a chiller?
Yes, that's exactly what a low-fog machine is. Standard glycol fog runs through an ice-cooled chamber, the fog cools below room temp, and it sinks. The look is close to dry ice but the cloud breaks up faster and tends to drift if there's any airflow. For a small ceremony it's a great middle option.

Is haze safe to breathe?
Water-based haze at typical event output levels has been studied extensively and is considered safe for short-duration exposure. Oil-based haze (DF-50 etc) is also safe but some people with asthma or sensitivities react. Always communicate with performers and guests with respiratory issues, and never run haze inches from someone's face.

Can I rent dry ice myself and run a fog machine?
You can buy dry ice at Smart & Final or Safeway, but a regular fog machine won't make low fog from it. You need either a dedicated dry-ice fog generator (hot water tank, ducted output) or a low-fog machine. Renting the right unit costs less than the cost of getting it wrong on the day.

What's the difference between a hazer and a fogger?
Particle size. A fogger makes large particles you see directly as a cloud. A hazer makes particles small enough that you don't see them, you only see the light passing through them. Different fluids, different machines, different effects. Don't let an Amazon product description confuse you.
