Oakland Warehouse Event Lighting: What Actually Works

Truss patterns, uplighting colors, and power realities for raw industrial spaces in Jack London Square, West Oakland, and Old Oakland.

Oakland's warehouse stock is the best blank canvas the Bay Area has — 16 to 30 foot ceilings, brick from the 1910s and 20s, exposed steel trusses, polished concrete, roll-up doors that swallow a 12-foot box truck. Couples and event planners book these rooms because nothing else in the region looks like them, then notice at the walkthrough there are no fixtures. A few sodium high-bays and clamp lights — that's the installed lighting budget for a 200-person reception.

The Oakland warehouse reality

Jack London Square, West Oakland, and the Old Oakland district hold dozens of converted industrial buildings: 16 to 30 foot ceilings, exposed brick 12 to 18 inches thick, steel I-beam trusses, polished concrete. What comes with raw industrial:

  • Mixed AC power. 1920s buildings were wired for sewing machines. 100-amp service on a single panel is common; some Jack London buildings have only two 30-amp circuits free for the reception side.
  • Loud HVAC, or none. Older rooftop package units thump and roar; some warehouses cool by opening the roll-up door. The room reads 80 dB ambient before any guest walks in.
  • Acoustic chaos. Concrete floor, brick walls, steel ceiling. A 30-foot cube reverberates 2 to 3 seconds without soft material. Lighting and sound plans have to talk to each other.

Truss: ground-supported vs T-bar

The building rarely has rated rigging points (assume nothing — we ask for a structural letter, and 9 times out of 10 there isn't one), so the rig stands on the floor.

Ground-supported truss towers with a horizontal span. Two vertical towers 16 to 24 feet apart on base plates, horizontal box truss spanning 20 to 40 feet between them, moving heads and par cans hung from the horizontal. Workhorse for 150 to 400 person receptions, putting serious lighting at 14 to 22 feet. Standard 12-inch box truss bolts together from 2-meter sticks (6.5 feet); the kit fits on two pallets through any 8-foot or 10-foot roll-up door. Cathedral spaces at 28 to 30 feet need 24-foot verticals — the max off a single tower without an engineering review.

T-bar stands for smaller rooms. 2,000 to 4,000 square foot lofts with 18-foot ceilings (common in Old Oakland) load in faster on T-bars. Each stand holds 4 to 6 pars or 2 small movers at 10 to 14 feet. Two stands per side handles most loft-scale receptions. Tradeoff: no horizontal across the room, so intersecting-beam effects don't work.

Rigging weight. A loaded tower runs 800 to 1,200 lbs at the base. Most Oakland warehouses are slab-on-grade and indifferent to point loads; some second-floor 1929-era lofts have wood-joist floors that need an outrigger spread. We run the math on the floor plan before load-out.

Uplighting on exposed brick: colors that flatter, colors that date the room

Uplighting is where most Oakland warehouse receptions live or die. The walls are the room's best feature; the right color makes the brick glow, the wrong color makes it look like a 2006 high school dance. Brick absorbs 40 to 60 percent of the light that hits it — a 4×18W RGBWA+UV battery par at 6 feet from a brick column paints a clean wash to about 14 feet; for 20 to 24 foot walls, go to 12×18W units, or stage two tiers.

Colors that flatter raw brick:

  • Warm amber (2200K-2700K). Default. Pulls natural orange and red tones out of the brick, reads like late golden hour.
  • Deep magenta and saturated rose. Romantic without going pink-prom. Pastel pink reads juvenile; full-saturation magenta reads adult.
  • Deep purple (toward indigo, not lavender). Works only if crossed with a warm key — straight purple on dark brick reads cold and flat.
  • Warm white at high CRI. Underrated. 2700K-3000K wash with no color reads as architectural lighting — the building looks expensive. Best for corporate galas and editorial weddings.

Colors to skip: cool blue reads as 1990s aquarium on brick. Bright green and lime read as Halloween or 2004 club. Cyan, same problem. Strobing color chases on textured brick read frenetic — save chases for the dance floor, not the wall.

Battery vs hardwired. Almost every Oakland warehouse runs on battery uplights. A 12 to 15 hour pack covers a 6-hour reception with reserve, no extension cords across walking lanes, no draw against a stretched 100-amp panel. Default to wireless under 6,000 square feet; for larger rooms or 10+ hour activations mix in hardwired pars on the truss.

Moving heads and beams: where they shine

In a hotel ballroom with 12-foot ceilings, moving heads are almost always overkill; in a 26-foot warehouse cathedral they earn their cost twice.

Where they shine: a 4-fixture LED wash mover rig on a 30-foot horizontal truss covers a 30×30 dance floor with full-saturation color and chases. Two small spot or hybrid movers backlighting the DJ booth turn a folding table into a stage — gobos throw textured patterns on the brick behind. Pure beam movers at 280-480W produce 1.6 to 3-degree shafts that read as tangible columns of light, but only with atmosphere. Where they're overkill: seated dinner crowds, lofts under 16 feet (not enough air for beams), and any room without atmosphere (movers without haze read as sweeping wall lights — pretty, but missing the visible-beam effect).

Haze in industrial spaces. Warehouses are large-volume with leaky HVAC and roll-up doors that vent atmosphere fast. Detection is usually beam detectors or zoned photoelectric heads, not the dense ionization grid of a hotel ballroom. Top Oakland warehouse venue patterns

  • Classic Cars West (Embarcadero). Indoor-outdoor — main room around 18 feet plus a beer-garden space. Uplighting the vintage cars often beats washing around them.
  • West Oakland industrial conversions (Studio Becker-style, boatworks, foundry annexes). The biggest cathedrals — 24 to 30 foot ceilings, full-height brick, steel truss roofs. Most rigging-friendly rooms in Oakland. Power is the variable.
  • 1100 Bowhill-area industrial wedding spaces. 4,000 to 8,000 square feet, 20 to 24 foot ceilings — textbook spec for ground-supported truss, 4 wash movers, 16 to 24 battery uplights, light haze.
  • Latitude One Bay (port-side warehouse). Bay-air HVAC and dock access. Atmosphere clears fast; lighting reads dramatic against the port skyline at sunset.
  • Old Oakland lofts. 2,000 to 5,000 square feet, 16 to 20 foot ceilings. T-bar stands often beat ground-supported truss here.

Power and sound ordinance

Sound. Oakland's industrial zones (parts of West Oakland, the Jack London corridor, the East Oakland flats) sit under different noise rules than residential. The municipal code Chapter 8.18 and Planning Code 17.120 set property-line decibel limits, with industrial zones tolerating higher levels and longer hours. Most Oakland warehouse weddings end amplified music at 10pm; some West Oakland venues farther from residential lines have approval past 11pm. Confirm the venue's permit — there's no citywide cutoff.

Power. Biggest failure mode: 200-amp rig, 100-amp building service. Three patterns:

  • Adequate (200+ amps, dedicated event sub-panel). Most recent conversions. Plug in, run cleanly.
  • Tight (100-150 amps, shared with HVAC). Older buildings. Rebalance — battery uplighting, LED-only fixtures, smaller PA, no catering hot box on the same panel.
  • Inadequate (under 100 amps free, or two-wire ungrounded panels). A 25kW or 45kW silent diesel generator parks outside and feeds a distro through the roll-up door. Adds budget plus a generator-proximity sound consideration (we site it on the far side or behind a baffle), but takes the power risk to zero.

How much lighting do I need for a 5,000 square foot Oakland warehouse?

Roughly: 16 to 24 battery uplights on the perimeter walls, a 4-fixture moving head wash on ground-supported truss for the dance floor, 8 to 12 pin spots on tables, and 2 spot or hybrid movers for the DJ booth. For 28-foot ceilings add 2 to 4 beam fixtures and a haze rig.

What color uplighting works on Oakland exposed brick?

Warm amber and warm white are the safe defaults — they pull the natural red and orange tones out of the brick. Deep magenta and saturated rose work for romantic moods. Deep purple works if crossed with warm pin spots. Skip cool blue, bright green, lime, and cyan.
