The Napa AV reality check

Most vineyards are off the grid for event loads. Wineries have power for production — pumps, presses, refrigeration, the tasting room. That panel is rarely accessible to event vendors; what is accessible is often a single 30-amp drop on the ceremony lawn. A reception with sound, lighting, low fog, a band, catering hot boxes, and bistro lights pulls 60 to 100 amps continuous. The math doesn't close on one circuit, so the AV plan brings its own power.

Napa County's noise rule shuts amplified music early in rural AVAs. County code Chapter 8.16 governs exterior noise, and most winery use permits add a more specific condition: outdoor amplified sound is allowed in a 10am to 9pm window. That 9pm cutoff is the one most couples are surprised by. In-town venues (city of Napa, Yountville town, downtown St. Helena) lean later — typically 10pm — but a venue's individual use permit can still cap the night earlier. Verify in writing with the venue, not from a city website.

Power planning: generator sizing

A 150-guest reception draws 30 to 45 amps continuous on the AV side — two 15-inch tops, dual 18-inch subs, four wireless mics, two moving heads, a profile for ceremony key, low fog, two cold spark units, a small DJ rig. Wireless battery uplights don't load the generator. Add a band's backline and stage wash, and the number climbs to 50 to 60. Catering and string lights run on a separate generator; do not share fuel sources.

Use an inverter generator, not a contractor unit. Inverter generators put out clean sine-wave AC. Construction-grade units throw harmonic distortion that shows up as buzz on mics, hum on subs, and erratic dimmer behavior. Standard rental is a quiet inverter in the 7 kW to 22 kW range — 22 kW covers a 150-guest reception; 7 kW handles a ceremony PA only.

Size for total load times 1.5, plus 20% headroom. Multiply summed wattage by 1.5 for inrush spikes, plus 20% so the unit isn't pegged all night.

Fuel runtime is the variable couples miss. A 22 kW inverter under half load runs 8 to 10 hours on a full tank. Plan one refuel during dinner — quietest moment, lowest demand. The operator handles it.

Cable runs are a noise compromise. Place the generator close enough that runs stay under 100 feet (voltage drop matters past that), far enough that the unit's 65 dBA at 23 feet doesn't sit in the speech band of the ceremony mic. Standard placement is behind a hedge or barn 75 to 100 feet downwind. Cable runs go under guest paths or under rubber ramps.

Sound rules by AVA

Cutoff varies — sometimes by ordinance, more often by what the venue's use permit says.

Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Mt. Veeder. Mountain AVAs, mostly rural-zoned, with use permits that commonly cap outdoor amplified sound at 9pm. A neighbor 800 feet downhill hears a sub more clearly than one 300 feet across the valley floor — cool evening air carries low frequencies down. Peak the dance set at 8:30pm, last call 8:45pm, off at 9pm sharp.

Stags Leap, Yountville, Rutherford, Oakville, rural St. Helena. Mid-valley — a mix of 9pm and 10pm. Larger flagship properties tend to have 10pm because their permits were negotiated when the market was looser; newer or modified permits land at 9pm.

Carneros (south Napa). Mixed zoning — resort properties at 10pm, ranch-style venues at 9pm. Wind plays here more than the cutoff does.

City of Napa, downtown St. Helena, Yountville town, Calistoga town. Inside city limits the practical cutoff is 10pm under municipal code. In-town venues also tend to have grid power, which simplifies the AV plan considerably.

What triggers a complaint. Single neighbor calls drive almost every Napa weekend complaint. Bass carries; a rolled-off low end at the SPL meter still reaches a property line. Fix: C-weighted SPL monitoring at the property line. A real engineer pulls subs back 3 to 6 dB once the sun is fully down — that's when low end stops dissipating and starts traveling.

Wind: tent PA on the west side

Carneros, the southern Mayacamas slope, and Mt. Veeder catch the strongest gusts; Yountville and Rutherford on the valley floor see less; the Vaca side (Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain) is in the lee and stays calmer.

Tent PA placement. Tops on stands at 8 to 10 feet are stable in 5 to 10 mph wind, marginal in 15, dangerous in 20-plus. Two fixes: drop stand height to 6 feet and tilt down, or fly the PA from tent rigging if the tent supports load-rated points. A 60-by-80 pole tent rated to 100 lbs per point can fly compact line-array elements over the dance floor.

Line array vs point source. A 15-inch top scatters high frequencies — the content wind disrupts most. A short line array (4 to 6 elements per side) keeps highs tight and projects past the wind layer.

Lavalier mics in wind. Foam shield is the minimum; a furry deadcat handles 15 mph and up. High-pass the channel at 100 Hz to roll off the rumble wind buffeting creates in the capsule. For Carneros ceremonies, spec the lav with a deadcat by default.

Venue patterns by zone

Brix (south edge of Napa city), Beringer (St. Helena, in town). Grid power, 10pm window in most cases. The easier Napa properties for AV — generator usually not needed.

Long Meadow Ranch Farmstead (St. Helena). Restaurant infrastructure and a working farm power feed. Ceremony and reception spaces typically have power; the dance floor still benefits from a small generator backup so audio doesn't share a circuit with the catering ovens.

Carneros Resort, Calistoga Ranch. Resort properties with full event power and in-house ops. The AV plan still brings its own quiet inverter for sound to keep audio clean of resort load swings.

Hans Fahden, Pine Ridge, Sterling, mountain estate venues. Generator-dependent. Power for production, not events. Plan a 22 kW inverter, fuel, and cable runs into the budget from day one. Cutoff typically 9pm. The trade is a setting that doesn't exist anywhere else in California.

Private estates (Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, ridge-line). Full off-grid plan. Generator, fuel reserve, separate lighting unit, wind plan. Walkthrough is non-negotiable.

The 9pm transition plan

The cutoff is not a problem if the night is built around it:

  • 5pm ceremony, lavalier on the officiant, wind plan if west-side.
  • 5:30 to 6:30pm cocktails, background music at 65 to 70 dB.
  • 6:30 to 8pm dinner with toasts at conversational level.
  • 8 to 8:45pm peak dance. Low fog primed for first dance, cold sparks staged if approved.
  • 8:45pm last call from the DJ or band lead.
  • 9pm hard cutoff. Acoustic music, bistro lights, conversation fill the next 30 to 60 minutes. Fire pit becomes the after-party.
  • 10pm guest departure per most use permits.
