If you've searched for a dry ice fog machine rental in San Francisco, you probably already know the look you want: a thick white blanket sliding across the floor, ankle-deep, that vanishes the moment it hits warm air. That's not what you get from a hazer or a glycol fogger. It's a different machine, a different consumable, and a different kind of headache to pull off in a city where parking a van outside the Palace of Fine Arts is its own little drama. We rent these rigs almost every weekend across the Bay Area, so this is the working tech's answer, not a brochure.

What dry ice fog actually looks like (and why it's not a hazer)

Dry ice fog is solid CO2 (about -109°F) dropped into hot water. The CO2 sublimates and pulls a curtain of condensed water vapor with it. Because the gas is colder and denser than the room, it stays low. That's the whole trick.

Here's why glycol foggers can't fake this:

  • Hazers (DF-50s, MDG ATMe) push fine atmospheric haze that makes light beams visible. It hangs in the air, never on the floor.
  • Glycol foggers (Antari, Chauvet) heat glycol fluid into warm vapor. Warm vapor rises. To fake low fog, you chill it through ice in a Le Maitre G300 or a homemade chiller. It works for maybe 20 seconds before the fog warms up and floats to chest height.
  • Dry ice fog stays on the deck because the CO2 is genuinely cold. No chilling tricks. It also dissipates fast, which is exactly what you want for a 90-second first dance.

The other thing nobody tells you: dry ice fog is the only effect that disappears cleanly. Chilled glycol leaves a film. Dry ice leaves nothing but a slightly damp dance floor for about ten minutes.

When to use dry ice fog at a San Francisco event

The honest answer: when the floor matters. If your shot list, your DJ moment, or your choreography is built around the floor, dry ice earns its keep. If you just want "some atmosphere," rent a hazer for a third of the price.

  • Wedding first dances. Easily 70% of our dry ice work. Couples at SF City Hall's rotunda, the Asian Art Museum's Samsung Hall, the Foundry SF, and Greens Restaurant in Fort Mason all book it. We've also done estate weddings at Cornerstone Sonoma where the ceiling is high enough that fog cling is gorgeous.
  • Band reveals and DJ drops. A 4-second blast on a downbeat hides a curtain pull or a riser move. Common at Pier 27 and Fort Mason Festival Pavilion.
  • Ballet and contemporary dance. ODC and a few Berkeley companies use it for "water" or "mist" visuals. Dancers like that it doesn't get them slippery the way glycol does.
  • Fashion runways. SF Design Week and Oakland streetwear shows want continuous low fog along the runway. This needs two machines - a single unit can't sustain it.

What's included in a venegeest dry ice rental

A "dry ice machine rental" isn't really one thing. It's four things bolted together, and the failure modes all live in the consumables and logistics, not the machine. Here's what shows up on a typical SF booking:

  1. The machine. We run Le Maitre Pea Soupers and MDG Ice Foggers. The Pea Souper is the workhorse - 3kW heater, 60L water capacity, kicks out a wall of fog for about 8 minutes per ice load. MDG runs cleaner for longer continuous use.
  2. Dry ice supply. Roughly 25-50 lbs per machine per hour of active fog. We source from Praxair in South SF or Airgas in Oakland. Pellets, not blocks - pellets sublimate faster and give you denser fog. We bring it in an insulated cooler, and we plan the pickup so it arrives within 90 minutes of show time. Dry ice loses about 5-10 lbs per day to sublimation, so we don't pre-stage it the day before unless the venue lets us store it in a walk-in.
  3. A technician. This isn't a self-op rental. The machine runs a 20A circuit, dumps boiling water as a byproduct, and someone has to load the dry ice basket without freezing their hands or fogging the room ten minutes early. Our techs cue with the DJ or stage manager off a clearcom or a hand signal.
  4. Hot water source plan. The machine needs water at about 180°F for peak output. Some venues let us tap a sink and refill on the fly. Others (looking at you, Asian Art Museum) won't let us anywhere near their kitchen, so we bring a 5-gallon insulated dispenser pre-filled. We confirm this on the site walk.

That last point trips up a lot of DIY attempts. People rent the machine, buy the dry ice, then realize the venue's only hot water tap is in a locked catering kitchen. The fog comes out as a sad lukewarm wisp. Hot water is the variable that makes or breaks the effect.

SF-specific operational notes

San Francisco is a weird city to run effects in. The venues are old, the HVAC is aggressive, fire marshals pay attention, and dry ice is hard to source on a Saturday morning.

Ceiling height changes everything. In a low-ceiling room (under 10 feet), warm-air return pushes the fog back down and you get a longer, thicker effect. In a high-ceiling room like the Palace of Fine Arts rotunda or City Hall's main staircase, you get a shorter, more dramatic moment because the fog has more vertical room to dissipate. We usually do two short bursts in tall rooms and one long burst in tight ones.

HVAC is the enemy. If the room's air handlers are blowing across the dance floor, fog streaks sideways instead of pooling. We do a smoke-pencil test on the site walk and ask the venue to set HVAC to recirculate or off for the cue. Greens at Fort Mason is the easiest. The Foundry has aggressive ceiling fans that have to be killed. City Hall doesn't let you touch HVAC, so we plan around the streaking.

Ventilation and CO2. Dry ice releases CO2. In a normal banquet room, it's a non-issue - 25 lbs of CO2 over an hour in a 30,000+ cubic-foot room. In a sealed bridal suite or basement green room, don't run it. SF Fire Code chapter 53 covers it; the rule is real.

Handling safety. Our techs wear cryo gloves. Dry ice causes frostbite in seconds with bare skin. We don't let venue staff or wedding party members touch the cooler. Sounds obvious until you've watched a groomsman try to help.

Sourcing on short notice. Praxair on Bayshore Blvd and Airgas in Oakland are our regulars. Both close early Saturday and aren't open Sunday. Same-day or next-day dry ice rentals in SF are genuinely hard. Book at least 4 days out if you can.

Pricing and lead times

Rough numbers for the Bay Area, current as of 2026:

  • Single-machine package (1 Pea Souper, 50 lbs dry ice, 1 tech, 4-hour call): $850-$1,100.
  • Dual-machine runway package (continuous fog over a 30-foot run): $1,600-$2,100.

FAQ

How long does the fog last?

A single Pea Souper load gives you about 90 seconds of dense, ankle-deep fog, then 30-60 more seconds of thinning cloud as the dry ice finishes sublimating. We size the dry ice to your cue list - if you need three separate moments through the night, we plan three loads.

Will it set off the venue's smoke detectors?

Almost never. Dry ice fog is condensed water vapor, not combustion smoke, so optical and ionization detectors generally don't trigger. That said, we always notify the venue and the fire watch in advance. A handful of SF venues (the de Young, SFMOMA event spaces) require us to coordinate with their engineering team, and we handle that.

Can I rent just the machine and run it myself?

We don't dry-hire dry ice rigs. Too much can go wrong - boiling water spills, frostbite, dry ice sourcing falling through, fog that won't fire because the water cooled off. It looks effortless because someone who's done it 200 times is babysitting the machine.

Is it safe for guests with asthma or respiratory issues?

Dry ice fog is water vapor and CO2 in tiny concentrations, gentler than glycol fog for most people. Cold air can trigger sensitivity in some asthmatics. If a guest has concerns, they can stand off the dance floor during the 90-second cue.

Does it work outdoors?

Sort of. The effect needs still air and a contained floor. A breezy terrace at Cavallo Point or a hilltop ceremony at Cornerstone Sonoma will scatter the fog before it pools. A walled courtyard or tented reception works fine. We swap to a CO2 jet effect if wind is over 5 mph.

What's the difference between dry ice fog and "dancing on a cloud"?

Same thing - "dancing on a cloud" is the wedding-industry name for a dry ice cue timed to the first dance. Some venues offer an in-house chilled-glycol package and call it dancing on a cloud. The look is different. If you want the thick, defined cloud from Instagram, that's almost always dry ice.
